Workshop on “Bridge Design to Eurocodes” with worked examples will take place in Vienna on 4-6 October 2010. This workshop will have emphasis on worked examples and intends to contribute towards the transfer of background knowledge and expertise of Eurocode Bridge Parts writers (CEN/TC250 Horizontal Group Bridges) to potential trainers at national level and Eurocode users. Shake Table Testing Workshop. University of California, San Diego

Hosted by the University of California, San Diego (UDSD), the University of Buffalo (UB), and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), this two‐day workshop is designed for researchers and industry members of the earthquake engineering community as prospective users of the three NEES Shake Table Sites.

 The workshop will include instruction and demonstrations on the applications, performance and operation of the University of California, San Diego Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LHPOST), the University of Buffalo twin multi-axis shake tables, the University of Nevada, Reno 4-shake tables, digital and analog controllers, data acquisition systems and instrumentation.  

 Instruction on advanced and innovative testing capabilities at the sites includes: the UB Nonstructural Component Simulator (NCS) & Geotechnical Laminar Box and recently developed research capabilities at UNR. 

 This workshop will provide participants with the necessary knowledge to assist them in the development of effective NEESR proposals, experiment design and planning, data handling and archiving. 

 The workshop will be web-cast. Presentation materials will be provided at the workshop and made available on the workshop website.

Major Shake Table Test of 4-span bridge at UNR Tuesday, June 15

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO TO WEBCAST SHAKE TABLE TEST
Through a $2M grant from the National Science Foundation and under the direction of Prof. Saiid Saiidi, researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno will be testing a 110-ft long, 11-ft tall bridge model to failure on June 15, 2010, starting at 10 am, Pacific Time.  Among unique features of this bridge model are composite piers that incorporate glass and carbon fibers, precast columns, segmental columns, and techniques for accelerated bridge construction.  More information about the bridge and the project is posted at http://nees.unr.edu/4-spanbridges/UNR%20Web%20AnnouncementCompositeBridge.pdf.

Preliminary Report on Baja California Earthquake Now Available

A draft preliminary report on the April 4, 2010 El Mayor-Cucapah Earthquake is now available at the Baja California Clearinghouse website or by clicking here. This report contains observations from many field investigators. The authors encourage comments; they can be sent to Jorge Meneses at jmeneses@kleinfelder.com.  A newsletter insert on this event will be published in the July EERI Newsletter.

Online Registration Open for EERI Soil Liquefaction Seminars

Register now for the new EERI Technical Seminar on Soil Liquefaction During Earthquakes, based on the 2008 EERI monograph.

One-day seminars will be held April 30 in Secaucus, New Jersey; May 14 in Atlanta, Georgia; and May 21 in Chicago, Illinois. The speakers will be the monograph authors, Professor Emeritus I. M. Idriss and Professor R. W. Boulanger, both of the University of California Davis.

The seminar will provide a synthesis — in one accessible resource for students, practicing engineers, and other professionals — of progress in the study of soil liquefaction since 1982. The following areas are covered: fundamentals of liquefaction behavior; methods for predicting the triggering of liquefaction during earthquakes; methods for predicting the consequences of liquefaction, such as slope instability or ground deformations; mitigation of liquefaction hazards; and cyclic softening of clays and plastic silts. The seminar is supported by FEMA.

The registration fee is only $225 for members of EERI and cosponsoring organizations (DFI, GEO-Institute, local ASCE Geotechnical Groups), $300 for nonmembers, and $113 for student, young professional, and retired EERI members. The seminar venues will be the Crown Plaza Hotel Secaucus-Meadowlands, the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta, and the Chicago Kent College of Law.

 The 2010 SECED Young Engineers Conference aims to bring together young engineers from both industry and universities to meet and interchange ideas related to the study and practice of earthquake engineering and civil engineering dynamics. The conference focuses on:
 – Structural dynamics (experimental, numerical, practical)
– Geotechnical earthquake engineering (experimental, numerical, practical)
– Seismology and risk assessment
– Seismic retrofit
 Confirmed speakers include: Prof. Ahmed Elghazouli (Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London), Dr Stavroula Kontoe (Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London) and Rob Smith (Arup).
 Prizes: £100 and £50 prizes will be given to the two best papers presented at the Conference. (To qualify for prizes, the lead author and presenter must have been under 35 years old by 1st January 2010). We are also looking for sponsorship.
 Registration: £165 (Includes the cost of food, conference dinner and conference proceedings.)
 Call For Abstracts: Deadline is Friday 14th May 2010.
 Abstracts should be limited to a maximum of 500 words and should include contact details of the corresponding author and affiliation of co-authors.
