Workshop on “Bridge Design to Eurocodes” with worked examples, Vienna, 4-6 October 2010

Workshop on “Bridge Design to Eurocodes” with worked examples will take place in Vienna on 4-6 October 2010. This workshop will have emphasis on worked examples and intends to contribute towards the transfer of background knowledge and expertise of Eurocode Bridge Parts writers (CEN/TC250 Horizontal Group Bridges) to potential trainers at national level and Eurocode users. Please find attached the first announcement of the workshop. It is also accessible on: http://eurocodes.jrc.ec.europa.eu/showpage.php?id=334_1  where you will also find additional information on the workshop.

For further questions you can send an e-mail at eurocodes-bridges2010@jrc.ec.europa.eu .

Deadline for registration has been extended to Friday 17th September 2010.

Special Session related to Information & Communication Technologies in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics

A mini-symposium is organised in the framework of the 3rd International Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN2011).

Focus and purpose: The mini-symposium focuses on recent advances in Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) and their applications in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics. More specifically, it is foreseen to invite papers that will demonstrate new software applications, web-based engineering tools, decision-making systems, collaborative on-site and remote research, frameworks for hybrid simulation (coupled experimental and numerical modules), open source applications, data and metadata dissemination and archiving, applications for mobile devices and remote computing as well as topic-specific GIS applications, that are developed and implemented in order to enhance the reliability of our prediction of structural response and the mitigation of the effects of earthquakes on structures. Emphasis will also be given to case studies and applications already publically available and/or applied in practice.

Abstracts: May be submitted electronically through the Conference Website

Important dates:
– Deadline for submission of abstracts: 15 October 2010
– Notification of abstract acceptance: 31 December 2010
– Deadline for early registration: 21 February 2011
– Conference: 26-28 May 2011

Shake Table Testing Workshop. University of California, San Diego

Hosted by the University of California, San Diego (UDSD), the University of Buffalo (UB), and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), this two‐day workshop is designed for researchers and industry members of the earthquake engineering community as prospective users of the three NEES Shake Table Sites.

The workshop will include instruction and demonstrations on the applications, performance and operation of the University of California, San Diego Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LHPOST), the University of Buffalo twin multi-axis shake tables, the University of Nevada, Reno 4-shake tables, digital and analog controllers, data acquisition systems and instrumentation.

Instruction on advanced and innovative testing capabilities at the sites includes: the UB Nonstructural Component Simulator (NCS) & Geotechnical Laminar Box and recently developed research capabilities at UNR.

This workshop will provide participants with the necessary knowledge to assist them in the development of effective NEESR proposals, experiment design and planning, data handling and archiving.

The workshop will be web-cast. Presentation materials will be provided at the workshop and made available on the workshop website.

Interest is expected to be high, so reserve your seat today by contacting Dan Radulescu, UCSD-NEES operations manager, 858.534.6686

Registration will close on September 10, or when all spots are filled.  For more information, visit http://nees.ucsd.edu/eot/workshops.shtml.

Major Shake Table Test of 4-span bridge at UNR Tuesday, June 15

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO TO WEBCAST SHAKE TABLE TEST
Through a $2M grant from the National Science Foundation and under the direction of Prof. Saiid Saiidi, researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno will be testing a 110-ft long, 11-ft tall bridge model to failure on June 15, 2010, starting at 10 am, Pacific Time.  Among unique features of this bridge model are composite piers that incorporate glass and carbon fibers, precast columns, segmental columns, and techniques for accelerated bridge construction.  More information about the bridge and the project is posted at http://nees.unr.edu/4-spanbridges/UNR%20Web%20AnnouncementCompositeBridge.pdf.

To observe the testing live, please follow this telepresence link http://nees.unr.edu/projects/4span.html at 10:00 am PDT on Tuesday June 15th.  Data will be streamed through RDV.
